The higher rate of interest indicates that the default risk is slightly higher than the first bond.

What many common investors fail to realize is that the complexity of the bond market requires a similar level of commitment and discipline. There are a variety of risks involved with buying bonds, and a wide array of strategies to tackle these risks.

Bond indexes are used more for comparing and measuring risk than for future guides like the stock indexes. For example, the JP Morgan Government Bond Index measures the risk of bonds by country. Investors can use these indexes and corresponding spreads between nations to find arbitrage opportunities.

There are strategies to minimize the overall risk of your bond portfolio. To combat interest rate risk, you would develop a ladder of bonds, purchasing bonds maturing in separate and sequential years.
